Why sail in Turkey?

plethora of attractions
At the point where East meets West, Turkey sits pretty inviting guests from all over the world to witness its plethora of attractions first-hand. For sailors who are tired of the conventional yacht charter destinations like Croatia, Italy, Greece or Spain, Turkey offers a welcome respite — both in terms of scenery and cost.

As a country that spans both Asia and Europe, Turkey is bordered to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, the west by the Aegean Sea and the north by the Black Sea. With more than 500 islands spanning over 7,000 km of coastline, you’re spoiled for choice. Some of the most-loved hot spots include the Aegean Riviera and the Antalya on the southern coast. With the Aegean Riviers positioned directly above the Greek Dodecanese, you can always hop over to the Greek islands of Rhodes or Kos.
In terms of weather, the best time to charter a yacht in Turkey is from May to November, while the days are sunny and the sea is still warm. Some also set sail in April or even December. The Meltemi winds are specific to the region, blowing in from the north to northwest, mainly affecting the south. It is perfect for sailing but can cause choppy seas, so it’s advised you keep an eye out when planning your route.

In Turkey, the marinas are kept in excellent condition, so you can count on both professional service and well-kept vessels. Dumping wastewater (black water) into Turkish waters is strictly prohibited by law and can result in heavy fines. Upon check-in, you will receive a “Blue Card,” — an electronic card that tracks the amount of wastewater disposed of on land.

Marmaris & Hisarönü Gulf

Marmaris is consistent in the way of sailing conditions with winds ranging from 10-20 knots. After a day of hitting the waves here, be sure to stop for some “pide” (Turkish pizza), grilled sea bass or red mullet, followed by a glass of Turkish wine. Further south in the Hisarönü Gulf, you’ll find smoother seas complemented by lush, pine-clad hills.

Kekova & Kaş

History buffs, this one’s for you. Kekova is — wait for it — an ancient Lycian city partially submerged in water. That means you can explore its ruins right from the comfort of your boat. The best part is that the waters here are sheltered with calm winds ranging from 10-15 knots.
From the sunken city in Kekova, make your way over to the Lycian tombs carved into the hills at Myra. It’s a sight like you’ve never seen before, and one not to be missed.
