Why sail in Spain?

A vibrant destination
Life is a fiesta, especially for those sailing Spain. Deep history, wild beauty and some of the best food you will ever eat are just a few reasons to book your next yacht charter in this vibrant destination.

Many areas in Spain, like the Balearic Islands (Ibiza, Mallorca) and some parts of the Costa Brava provide sheltered bays. They’re forgiving for novice sailors due to their calm waters. More variable winds can be found in Galicia and the Atlantic Coast for those with experience. Other thrilling destinations for seasoned sailors include the coastlines of Costa da Morte or the Cíes Islands.

Ready? Set? Set sail in Spain

taking your breath away

As with other popular destinations in the Mediterranean, chartering a yacht during the shoulder season is advised. May, June and September come with generally pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists. This makes it easier to find moorings and bask in hot spots without the crowds.

Ready? Set? Set sail in Spain, relax on its sun-soaked shores and enjoy the warm embrace of Spanish culture.

Spain

The best areas for sailing in Spain

Spain offers various sailing destinations, each with its own charm. Here are some of the best sailing areas in Spain:
Cantabria
Asturias
Galicia
Rías Baixas
Balearic Islands

Cantabria

From its charming fishing villages to its glorious cliffs, Cantabria, located on Spain’s northern coast provides a feast for the eyes. The weather can be a little unreliable here, but if you can make sure to hit the shore at the region’s capital, Santander.
The Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa is also worth a visit with its high meadows, dramatic limestone crafts and lakes. A mountain hike here may afford you a peek at some of its wildlife, such as brown bears, chamois, Iberian wolves, golden eagles, wild boar and red deer.

Asturias

The best time to set sail in Asturias is during the summer months as the weather can be quite changeable. But it’s important not to simply stay aboard your vessel. Make sure to go ashore and visit Gijón, Asturias's largest city. Try local delicacies such as fabada asturiana (a rich bean stew) and visit traditional cider houses too.

Galicia

The fjord-like coastline, known as Rías Altas and Rías Baixas, boasts both picturesque landscapes and superior sailing conditions. The pulpo a la gallega (octopus) and fresh oysters are of prime quality, so it’s no wonder that it is known as the land of seafood and Celtic heritage.

Costa da Morte

Named “the Coast of Death,” this adventure is not for the faint-hearted. Sure, the name is dramatic, but sea lovers are drawn to it due to its rugged nature and unspoiled, wild and untamed beauty. Be cautious when sailing near cliffs and rocky areas. Updated charts and on-hand GPS are essential in this area. Make sure to see the legendary Finisterre lighthouse and watch the sun setting over the Atlantic Ocean.

Rías Baixas

The true gem of the northwest, and a breathtaking haven with lush landscapes. Take advantage of the rich wine culture here and tempt yourself with a glass of the regional Albariño, the local white wine. If you’re anchoring in Baiona and Combarro make sure to choose a spot that’s well protected from the wind.

A Coruña

A fusion of the traditional and modern is found in A Coruña as it’s both a historic port city and a modern metropolis. Too often overlooked by some travellers, the cultural vibe is alive and thriving with a delicious food scene and buzzing nightlife. Sailing enthusiasts know that A Coruña has excellent marina facilities with knowledgeable locals at every turn.

Cíes Islands

Often referred to as the Galician Caribbean, the Cíes Islands are at the heart of Rías Baixas. This protected national park is a magnet for sailors with its turquoise waters and secluded beaches. Amenities can be limited so be sure to plan for adequate supplies. Follow the Leave No Trace principles to preserve the precious environment and avoid disturbing the wildlife.
