Why sail in Italy?

it captivates
As one of the world’s most popular escapes, Italy captivates with its timeless landscapes and irresistible food. The fact is, this country overflowing with rich history art and culture, inspiring travellers at every turn. Then there’s the long, sandy beaches and Alpine heights that make your head spin.

With so many possibilities, choosing where to go can be overwhelming. The same can be said for chartering around this great country.

When & Where to go?

taking your breath away

So, when should you go, and where? The best time of year is the shoulder season. In spring, specifically May and June, you’ll find Italy blossom along with the flowers. September is also a smart choice, as the warm weather and light winds will do the trick and the sea is still beautifully warm. August is not the time to book your yacht charter in Italy. With so many local tourists and global travellers around, prices go up, in the cafes, bars, restaurants and marinas too.

The best sailing destinations in Italy

Italy offers various sailing destinations, each with its own charm. Here are some of the best sailing areas in Italy:
Tuscan Archipelago
Sardinia
Amalfi
Rome
Sicily

Tuscan Archipelago

Legend has it that when Venus rose from the waves, seven precious stones fell from her tiara and created the seven islands that make up the Tuscan Archipelago. The largest, Elba, is joined by its smaller counterparts, Giglio, Giannutri, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo and Gorgona
This archipelago is home to a number of national parks and all the islands have a rich history that dates back to ancient civilisations. For example, the island of Elba is famously known as the location of the exile of Napoleon Bonaparte. Capraia is known for its fresh and delicious seafood, while Aleatico wine is not to be missed in Elba.

Sardinia

Spoiled with white sands and sparkling turquoise waters, Sardinia is one of the Mediterranean’s most alluring getaways. Its capital and largest city, Cagliari comes with its own multi-layered history. The nightlife, shopping and dining are all available in the Marina district which sits on the palm-fringed waterfront.

For a dramatic and scenic charter adventure, hit the Golfo di Orosei, which has many of its locations only accessible by boat or foot. Alternatively the Arcipelago della Maddalena, on the northeastern part of Sardinia is ideal for island hopping.
Compared to overrun tourist destinations, Sant’Antioco, an island in the southwestern part of Sardinia is much more laid-back. The underwater caves, vibrant marine life and archaeological sites dating back to the Phoenician and Roman periods give explorers plenty of activities to pass the time.

Bay of Naples, Pontine Islands and Amalfi in the Tyrrhenian Sea

The south of Italy, specifically the Bay of Naples, hides in plain sight some of the most spectacular Roman relics you’ll find. From the ruins of Pompeii to the archaeological wonders like the lavishly frescoed villa of Oplintis and their common nemesis, Mt Vesuvius.

The Tyrrhenian Sea continues to provide the goods, with the islands just off the Amalfi Coast a blast for charter enthusiasts of all experience levels. The surprisingly diverse islands of Procida, Ischia and Capri differ in both landscape and ambiance. The smallest, Procida is unspoiled and makes for a quiet respite from the crowds, a treat that you can explore in just a few hours.
Capri on the other hand is the go-to location for celebrity sightings and glamorous shopping. Ischia, the largest of them all offers hidden coves, botanical gardens and natural spas. Combine this with the Pontine Islands in this region and you have yourself a perfect 7-day charter.

The Aeolian Islands and Sicily

For experienced sailors looking for a challenge, this one’s for you. According to ancient mythology, Aeolus, the God of the Winds lived here, and his presence can still be felt today as you navigate the thrilling currents and wounds that sweep through these islands. Just off the northeastern coast of Sicily, you'll find these Unesco-protected Aeolian Islands: Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi.
Once again, the Tyrrhenian Sea does not disappoint, providing visitors with a cocktail of volcanic islands, active volcanoes, natural thermal baths, honey-sweet Malvasia wine and truly warm locals. If you’re looking for magic in the Mediterranean, you’ll find it here.
