Laced with ancient ruins and mythical tales at every turn, the Greek islands deliver when it comes to taking your breath away. With 6,000 islands and islets to choose from, there is a good chance you’ll find the perfect getaway to anchor in the wild, swim in the pristine, turquoise waters and avoid the crowds of mass tourism.

The best time to dip your toe into the crystal clear waters of Greece is between Orthodox Easter (typically April) and May, or from September through to the end of October. The weather is milder, the crowds are thinner and the prices are more reasonable.

Why sail in Greece?

taking your breath away

The Greeks certainly have a zest for life, and the locals are as welcoming as they come. Your sailing journey should include a visit to the local fishing villages and local tavernas where you can experience the first-hand magical culture of the people.

Take your tastebuds on a culinary adventure of their own and sample some of the finest fresh seafood, feta cheese, olive oil, and homemade tzatziki. Embrace the song, dance and sail. Become one with the people.

The best sailing destinations in Greece

Greece offers a variety of sailing destinations, each with its own charm. Here are some of the best sailing areas in Greece:
Sporades
Dodecanese
Cyclades
Athens
Ionian islands

Greece

If you yearn for dreamy Greek islands drenched in snow-white villages, blue domed churches and azure seas, this is where you “seas the day” and set sail. There’s Mykonos, the most glamorous of them all, where you can rub shoulders with party-going celebrities. Think St-Tropez fused with Ibiza.

As you sail towards Santorini, you'll be taken aback by the towering cliffs that rise dramatically above the turquoise waters. You'll realise you're navigating the vast caldera of a submerged volcano, with an island before you formed by an ancient eruption of unimaginable magnitude.

Known for high visibility in its waters, Paros is popular amongst divers for its gorgeous reefs and also hails some of the most magnificent shipwrecks, like the popular Marianna. A popular sailing destination due to its winds, you’ll also have opportunities for windsurfing and kite-surfing.

Ionian Islands

Located west of mainland Greece you’ll find the Ionian Islands, best known for their cooler climate and lush green vegetation. Corfu, one of the main attractions in the area is popular with history buffs due to its two historical fortresses that bookend the Old Town. Alternatively, Aqualand Corfu Water Park is popular with those young in age and young at heart.
The cove at Myrtis Beach in Kefallonia is adored by both locals and visitors, as are the Drogarati Cave and the Melissani Lake, one of the more dramatic sights you’ll set your gaze upon. Zakynthos offers panoramas like no other, with looming cliffs and mysterious shipwrecks topped with sulphur-filled hot springs.

Dodecanese Islands

If ever you want to step back to the times of Odysseus and Alexander, the curving Dodecanese archipelago is the place to do it. If the ancient city walls in Rhodes don’t do it for you, then the Corinthian columns in Kos will. In fact, the whole old town is scattered with ancient Greek ruins, with a mediaeval castle watching over the harbour.
Italian architecture is evident in the pastel-coloured homes and inspires gasps of awe from passengers as soon as they see the Gilos harbour. The Symi shrimp, sweet and tiny is eaten in its entirety and is a delicacy here.

Sporades

Created to protect the endangered Mediterranean monk seal and rare sea birds, the National Marine Park of Alonnisos is the largest in Europe running 2,260 sq km. Although the shy monk seal is rarely seen, you can find three different species of dolphins, turtles and migrating whales.

Skiathos is blessed with some of the most exquisite sandy white beaches, counting 65 in total, including the 1,200 km-long Koukounaries Beach, and a few nudist beaches named Big Banana and Little Banana, highly popular amongst the LGBTIQ community.
Skopelos is artier, wilder and more laid-back than Skiathos and is famed for starring in the 2008 hit movie Mamma Mia!

Saronic Islands

Easily accessible from the Greek capital, Athens, the Saronic islands are popular destinations for short boat charters. From the Byzantine Paleohora ruins to the 5th-century Temple of Aphaia, the island of Aegina is never short of historical flair.

Hydra is one of the few islands in Greece that is free of wheeled vehicles, which means no cars or scooters. Just the rocks, donkeys and tiny cobblestone streets.
Poros offers a well-protected harbour ensuring a safe anchorage for even lesser experienced sailors. From here you can visit neighbouring islands like Spetses and Aegina with ease.
